A well preserved tessera, creatively designed and of fine style
Lot 2098
ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. 2nd-3rd centuries. Tessera (Lead, 14x14 mm, 2.93 g). Sphinx seated right on amphora lying on its side. Rev. Blank. Apparently unpublished. A well preserved tessera, creatively designed and of fine style. Good very fine.

From a European collection, acquired before 2021.

It is tempting to assign this tessera to the city of Chios, which featured the Sphinx and an amphora on its coinage from classical Greek to Roman provincial times.
